For more than the past two decades, Polestar has been known for producing high-performance combustion engine motorsports vehicles hand-in-hand with Volvo, until NOW.

With such a rich history and such a promising future, Volvo Mission Viejo is more than excited to take a deep dive into an analysis of Polestar and Volvo! 




What exactly did Polestar used to do?

Polestar originated as a racing team which worked on their own cars to help Volvo's racing division win the Swedish Touring Car Championship in 1996 (Read The Full Polestar History Below). Finding success as a racing team, and bringing home plenty of wins for themselves and Volvo, Polestar decided to go public with their first real release of their S60 model in 2013. 2014 followed with the release of the Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar.


Volvo saw this as a great opportunity with long term potential, and outright purchased Polestar to bring them on as their personal performance division - which we all have grown to know and love over the years. At the core of Polestar's engineering philosophy is to create an optimally safe, balanced, and reliable driving experience. Through a balance of performance and control, Polestar has succeeding in innovating and manufacturing vehicles that customers have come to love.


Another main business process of Polestar is performing engine upgrades on select Volvo models. Polestar believes that there is always room for improvement, so they have a focus on different key features to fine tune and optimize through different software upgrades. Polestar optimization leads to faster acceleration, faster gear changing, better control, improved reliability, and better engine response.

Polestar 1 Hybrid: Polestar's first attempt at electric vehicles

Released in 2019, the Polestar 1 is the company's first go at an electric hybrid which was met with plenty of praise for its stylish design and performance. Incredibly, on their very first attempt, the Polestar 1 is capable of the largest electric range of ANY plug-in hybrid in existence at a whopping 78 miles.


While sharing some similarities to the Volvo S90, this performance hybrid is very much its own vehicle that stands on its own - and looks aggressively sleek while doing so. Carbon fiber lining the sloped body, as well as the interior, combined with a panoramic glass roof that stretches the entire length and width of the vehicle make the Polestar 1 look like a cruiser straight from the future. It's no wonder the popular racing video game, "Need For Speed", featured the Polestar on the cover of the game.


Even more impressive than the interior however, is its hybrid powertrain which fuels incredible performance as efficiently as ever.  34 kWh of power provided by its battery packs powers two electric motors driving the rear wheels while a turbocharged engine powers the front wheels. Together, the Polestar 1 pushes an impressive 619 horsepower with a 0-60 mph accelleration of 4 seconds.









Polestar 2: Polestar's first FULLY electric vehicle

The Polestar 2 will be an avant-garde fastback designed for both maximum aerodynamic performance in classic Polestar fashion as well as for maximum storage and comfort. Combining the best of both worlds, Polestar is claiming to have found the perfect balance between form and function - a blend of performance, style, and comfort. This is intended to compete with the Tesla Model 3.

In terms of performance, the next release of the Polestar 2 is a massive launch and first step for the manufacturer because it is their first pure attempt at taking on their goal of producing the ideal fully electric vehicle. It is estimated that the Polestar 2 will come boosted with a huge 78 kWh battery and a charge range of around 250-275 miles. Additionally, it will come with 408 horsepower from a 300 kW electric powertrain.

Pricing: Being extremely affordable for the advanced technology, the Polestar 2 will start out at a $45,000 base model price. Interestingly, this base model will not be released right away, but instead the Polestar 2 will be introduced as a more feature packed model at a price tag of $63,000.






What future models does Polestar have planned?

With the release of the Polestar 2 approaching quickly in 2020, fans are already looking to the future in anticipation of what style of models that Polestar will be brainstorming and releasing. While it is obvious that future models will be fully electric vehicles, the different body styles are a bit less known.


What is confirmed however, is that the upcoming vehicle after the Polestar 2 will be a coupe-style SUV crossover - predictably named the Polestar 3. This is a move that makes total sense with the growing demand for coupe crossovers and more introductions of models in this class coming from most manufacturers. This demand, combined with an ever increasing interest in and adoption of electric vehicles, makes us believe that it will be a MAJOR success and we are so excited to see what it brings to the table.



While the Polestar 4 and 5 plans are a mystery to everyone thus far, we have a sneaking suspicion that we can take a decent guess as to what would fit into their lineup perfectly:


1) With a coupe SUV crossover already added, it only makes sense that Polestar release a traditional electric SUV to satisfy families needs for more space. Being the most obvious gap in the Polestar lineup, it only makes sense to offer much needed options and serve every demographic.

2) Another model that we very well may see in the coming years is a remake of the Polestar 1 coupe - but FULLY electric. This would likely be a few years down the line so the timing and need for a new coupe would be perfect, and Polestar has made it clear that their focus from here on out will be on FULLY electric vehicles. If we had to put our money on new additions, it would certainly be these two.




Full History of Polestar

Founded in 1996, Polestar was orginally created under the name "Flash Engineering" to manufacture a race car that would help the Volvo team in winning the Swedish Touring Car Championship, or STCC. Flash Engineering and Volvo found immediate success, winning their first two years before taking their car international to compete in more races and winning again.


Out of Polestar, many amazing innovations and vehicles came which made their way to Volvo and changed the entire industry - some of which are still being produced and upgraded each year. Some of these vehicles include the S40, S60, C30, and V60.


In 2013, Polestar released its first public production model, the Volvo S60 Polestar, of which only 100 models were released as a test for future market expansion. This release found great success with positive public feedback, making the future of Polestar look very bright. The very next year in 2014, the Volvo S60 and V60 Polestar launched in eight different markets around the world - marking their first massive global debut.


Finding success in the public market, Volvo quickly purchased the performance division of Polestar in 2015 having them focus on improving Volvo's performance division. The racing division of which Polestar was originally created for continued on seperately under the new name Cyan Racing. Right off the bat, the newly focused Volvo owned Polestar's goal was perfect driveability by balancing performance and control to give customers the ideal experience.


In 2017, Polestar's goal and purpose changed to being an electric performance car brand - focusing on innovation in a highly competitive emerging market. With the earth and our environment in mind as their highest priority, Polestar will continuously strive to continue creating increasingly efficient performance vehicles that impress visually and performance-wise.
